12th September 2025 - Beinn na Drise and Beinn Bhuidhe

Walk Details

Distance walked: 6.4 miles

Total ascent: 1715 ft

OS map used: 374 - Isle of Mull North & Tobermory

Time taken: 6 hrs

Route description: Eas Fors car park, B8073-B8073-Tigh na Caora-Laggan Burn-Beinn na Drise-Beinn Bhuidhe-Caol Lochan-Allt Mor-Allt an Eas Fors-B8073-
 Eas Fors car park, B8073

It's my final day on Mull, and with another day of showers and strong winds forecast I was in two minds about whether to opt for a low-level walk or go up onto the hills. I went for the latter, although the route that I took from one of my guidebooks visited relatively small hills by the standards of Mull. Starting from the Eas Fors car park on the B8073 by the north shore of Loch Tuath, it made its way up onto the moors to take in the summits of Beinn na Drise and Beinn Bhuidhe, visited Caol-Lochan, and returned by following the burns of Allt Mor and Allt an Eas Fors to the B8073. With good visibility I didn't have any problems finding my way on what is largely featureless and rough moorland. The only issue I had was having to get across Allt an Eas Fors on the way down. It took me a while to find a spot narrow enough for me to jump it, as it was too deep to wade. The sun was out when I set off from the car park, and although I did get caught by a few showers, they passed through pretty quickly on that strong wind and weren't too heavy. The changeable weather meant that I enjoyed some great views across Mull and the surrounding sea.

After parking my car in the Eas Fors car park on the B8073 I walked east along the road until I reached a track on the left, which I took to the cottages at Tigh na Caora. Just after passing the cottages I went through a gate on the left and took a path that climbs steeply up and round the hillside to the abandoned village of Bruach Mhor. From there I made my way across the moor to join the course of Laggan Burn, which I followed uphill towards its source on the slopes of Beinn na Drise. As it dwindled to nothing I crossed it and made my way up to the trig point and summit of Beinn na Drise. After a break for lunch and to take in the view I left Beinn na Drise by heading northwest across the moor, passing over the minor bump of Tom na Sealga, and up to the summit of Beinn Bhuidhe. From Beinn Bhuidhe I made my way west to Caol-Lochan, from where I followed the course of Allt Mor downhill to where it joined Allt an Eas Fors. It wasn't easy to cross Allt an Eas Fors, but once I did there was a rough walk down the moorland to its east until I reached a spot where I could see a track from a mobile phone mast down to the B8073 below. I got onto this and followed it down to the road, then a short walk west along it brought me back to the Eas Fors car park.
