It's my first full day on the Isle of Mull after travelling up from home yesterday. Up until this year the only Scottish island that I'd visited was Skye, now I can add Mull to Arran that I went to in June. I've a got a week of typical Hebridean weather to try and plan my walks around, very changeable and constantly windy. Staying in Pennygown, which is on the A849 between Craignure and Salen, I ended up taking routes from my guidebooks that were on the north and west of the island. Nearby Salen has a shop and petrol station, which came in handy. The forecast for today is for a grey, overcast, and windy day with rain arriving later in the afternoon. I picked an easy low-level walk for this first day that started from the village of Dervaig and used a good track and path to visit Quinish Point on the north coast of the island.
From where I parked my car in Dervaig I walked up the B8073 to The Bellachroy Hotel, then turned left and took the lane behind it. I walked along this lane through Dervaig, past the cottages at Cuin and to its end at a gate and track into woodland. I followed this track north through the woodland, through Home Farm, then out of the woodland just past Quinish House. The track continued north through more open countryside, then up along the side of a small hill to reach a gate just before the cottage of Mingary. A sign on it points the way to Quinish Point. I then followed the clear path across pastures, towards the coast, then north to Dun Dubh and Quinish Point, where I stopped for lunch. After this break I made my way back along the path for a short distance before heading up onto the moorland above to visit the trig point on Mingary Aird. Once I'd taken in the view I returned to the path, walked along it back to the track, and then along that all the way back to Dervaig.

Route map
From where I parked my car in Dervaig, I've walked up to The Bellachroy Hotel to turn left and take the lane behind it
I walk along the lane through Dervaig, and past the cottages at Cuin near its end..
Views across Loch a' Chumhainn to my left..
From the end of the lane I follow a track through woodland
and then past Home Farm, the track goes round it to the right
and past Quinish House
Once past Quinish House the track leaves the woodland for more open countryside
Views out to the open sea..
and across to Rubha an h-Airde
A standing stone a short detour from the track
I follow the track up a zig-zag on the side of a rocky knoll
The view to the north appears ahead
The track is left behind at this gate for a path to Quinish Point
The path starts by heading across fields
and then rougher ground towards the coast. That knoll just ahead is Dun Ban.
Following the path north to the coast at Dun Dubh...
Looking northeast along the coast to Sorne Point, and across to Ben Hiant on Ardnamurchan
and southwest to Mornish
I can make out the low-lying island of Coll on the horizon
To the north, Rum is much easier to make out in the distance beyond the western end of Ardnamurchan
At Quinish Point below Dun Dubh. Looking along the coast to Sorne Point, and across to Ben Hiant on Ardnamurchan.
The Isle of Rum in the distance beyond the western end of Ardnamurchan
Dun Ban just along the coast, and Mornish across the sea
At the trig point on Mingary Aird. Ben Hiant on Ardnamurchan in the distance, with Meall an Inbhire on the right.
Looking southwest across to Mornish and Caliach Point. I can't help but notice the deteriorating weather.
Down from the trig point and on the path back to the end of the track
Following the track south back towards Dervaig..
The track enters the woodland when it reaches Quinish House, and I follow it back to Dervaig..
