9th September 2025 - Calgary Bay and Caliach Point

Walk Details

Distance walked: 7.2 miles

OS map used: 374 - Isle of Mull North & Tobermory

Time taken: 5 hrs

Route description: Calgary Bay-Rubha nan Oirean-Caliach Point-Cailaich Farm-B8073-Calgary Bay

I've made my way to Calgary Bay for my third walk on Mull. My route was taken from one of my guidebooks and takes in the west coast of Mornish, visits the trig point at Caliach Point on the northwestern tip of Mull, then returns to Calgary Bay by using the road through Mornish. I didn't have any problems following it except for when it came to getting to Caliach Point, but once I located the wall that's mentioned in the guidebook it was easy enough. The forecast was for a cloudy and windy day with a bit of sunshine and the odd drizzly shower. I enjoyed the best of it when I was walking along the coast, as I had some sunny spells for taking in the great scenery.

From the car park at the picnic site next to the B8073 at Calgary Bay I set off by taking the track west along the north shore of Calgary Bay until it reached the pier that's marked on the map. I then followed the track uphill to a gate, where it was left for a path west below a fence. Further on the path crosses this fence via a stile and continues west below Cnoc Udmail to Rubha nan Oirean. I then made my way north along the coast, there's a pretty clear path to follow most of the time. As I approached Cailaich Farm I made my way across to a substantial wall that runs southwest to northeast not that far to the west of the farm. I followed it to its southwestern end, and then crossed the fence there before making my way north to the trig point above Caliach Point. After a break for lunch and to take in the view I made my way south above the coast to a track that reaches the end of the road at Cailaich Farm. A walk east and then south along this road brought me to the B8073, where I turned right and walked along it back to the car park at the picnic site.

My guidebook mentions having to cross a substantial wall to reach Caliach Point. The one up ahead looks pretty substantial to me.
