17th April 2015 - Dunsop Bridge & Whins Brow
Walk Details
Distance walked: 9.4 miles
Total ascent: 1653 ft
OS map used: OL41 - Forest of Bowland & Ribblesdale
Time taken: 5 hrs
Route description: Dunsop Bridge-Closes Barn-Bishops House-Lower Brennand-Brennand Farm-Ouster Rake-Whins Brow-Ouster Rake-Trough House-Trough Barn-Sykes Farm-Langden Brook-Dunsop Bridge
Another walk that took in places that I hadn't been to in many years. I remember walking the bridleway up to Brennand Farm from Dunsop Bridge years ago and then crossing over to Whitendale to complete the loop around Middle Knoll before heading back down the valley. It was a lovely spring day for reacquainting myself with the area and there were great views from the summit of Whins Brow.
From the car park in Dunsop Bridge I made my way through the village and across the bridge over the River Dunsop. After a short walk up the road I took the bridleway that heads up the valley of the Dunsop and into Brennandale to Brennand Farm. I then made my way up the Ouster Rake bridleway, at its summit I did a there and back to the summit of Whins Brow before heading down to the Trough road at Trough Barn. I then had a walk down the road, (with a spell avoiding it between Langden Intake and Hareden Intake), to reach the bridleway across to Closes Barn where I joined my outbound route back to the start.

Route map
It's a quiet start to the walk in Dunsop Bridge..
Dunsop Bridge's war memorial stands by the corner of the road above the village
On the bridleway past Closes Barn
I have a nice view of the fells around Langden Brook and the road to the Trough
The River Dunsop
It's a long but quiet road walk by the River Dunsop to reach Brennandale
The Whitendale River
Into Brennandale
The Brennand River
I decided to go past Brennand Farm to get a view up into the wilder part of Brennandale
Back at Brennand Farm and I'm going to take the Ouster Rake bridleway
Looking back down on Brennand Farm..
..and on Brennandale from Ouster Rake
At the top of Ouster Rake I left the bridleway for a pathless ascent by a fence to the trig point on the summit of Whins Brow
The surface of the peaty summit pool is rippled by the breeze
There are great views from up here today. To the southeast the distinctive profile of Pendle Hill.
The distant outline of the West Pennine Moors to the south
Looking across Losterdale to Totridge and Fair Snape Fell
Looking down Wyresdale to the coast
Ward's Stone and Wolfhole Crag
To the northeast I can just about make out the summits of Whernside, Ingleborough and Penyghent over the tops of White Hill and Baxton Fell
Barden Moor and Bronte Country to the east beyond nearby Dunsop Fell
Following the fence back to Ouster Rake. For the most part it was easy going due to the recent dry weather but there were a couple of boggy bits where I was glad that I had my trekking poles.
Through the ruins of Trough House
The Trough road. This way to the Trough of Bowland, I'm going the other way, down to Langden Intake.
Past Sykes Farm
By Langden Brook..
Finally back in Dunsop Bridge
