17th April 2015 - Dunsop Bridge & Whins Brow

Walk Details

Distance walked: 9.4 miles

Total ascent: 1653 ft

OS map used: OL41 - Forest of Bowland & Ribblesdale

Time taken: 5 hrs

Route description: Dunsop Bridge-Closes Barn-Bishops House-Lower Brennand-Brennand Farm-Ouster Rake-Whins Brow-Ouster Rake-Trough House-Trough Barn-Sykes Farm-Langden Brook-Dunsop Bridge

Another walk that took in places that I hadn't been to in many years. I remember walking the bridleway up to Brennand Farm from Dunsop Bridge years ago and then crossing over to Whitendale to complete the loop around Middle Knoll before heading back down the valley. It was a lovely spring day for reacquainting myself with the area and there were great views from the summit of Whins Brow.

From the car park in Dunsop Bridge I made my way through the village and across the bridge over the River Dunsop. After a short walk up the road I took the bridleway that heads up the valley of the Dunsop and into Brennandale to Brennand Farm. I then made my way up the Ouster Rake bridleway, at its summit I did a there and back to the summit of Whins Brow before heading down to the Trough road at Trough Barn. I then had a walk down the road, (with a spell avoiding it between Langden Intake and Hareden Intake), to reach the bridleway across to Closes Barn where I joined my outbound route back to the start.

At the top of Ouster Rake I left the bridleway for a pathless ascent by a fence to the trig point on the summit of Whins Brow

There are great views from up here today. To the southeast the distinctive profile of Pendle Hill.

Following the fence back to Ouster Rake. For the most part it was easy going due to the recent dry weather but there were a couple of boggy bits where I was glad that I had my trekking poles.
