18th July 2013 - Slievenamon, Ireland
Walk Details
I've been visiting Clonmel in County Tipperary for work off and on for four years now and each July since 2010. There are quite a few places to go hill walking nearby but I've never been prepared or the weather hasn't played ball for me to take advantage.
Slievenamon, at 721m (2365ft) is just to the northeast of Clonmel and dominates the town.
The weather this week has been really hot and sunny and is set to continue that way so there's no excuse.
Me and Brian, a friend and colleague have decided to do an evening ascent after work. Our route is by a track from just outside the village of Kilcash which is about 15 minutes drive from Clonmel. It took us 2 hrs to get to the top and back down.

The track that is our route of ascent and descent
Enough height is soon gained to allow a view of the Suir valley
and across to the Comeragh Mountains and Knockanaffrin
It's really hot this evening as we make our way up
The trig point and large cairn on the summit of Slievenamon
The Comeragh Mountains to the south on the other side of the valley of the River Suir
It's very hazy but those hills in the distance are the Knockmealdown Mountains
The view to the north across County Tipperary
Me on the summit and..

Looking across to the Comeragh Mountains as we head back down
Zooming in on Knockanaffrin, where we'll be tomorrow evening
We've made it back down in the last of the light
