20th February 2015 - Bride Stones Moor

Walk Details

Distance walked: 5.6 miles

Total ascent: 1124 ft

OS map used: OL21 - South Pennines

Time taken: 3 hrs

Route description: Lydgate-Owlers Walk-Calderdale Way-Windy Harbour-Eastwood Road-Bride Stones Moor-Kebs Road-Mount Lane-Stony Lane-Hudson Moor-Orchan Rocks-Jumps Lane-Lydgate

The weather may not have been the best this afternoon but it still felt good to have a walk and get some fresh air and exercise. Not just good for the body but for the mind as well. I enjoy visiting the rocky top of Bride Stones Moor but perhaps Orchan Rocks was my favourite spot of the day as it brightened up for my arrival here.

I parked on Church Lane in Lydgate (it's off the main road) then walked to its end and onto the path of Owlers Walk. At its end I turned left and onto the Calderdale Way under the railway viaduct, uphill through Kitson Wood and across Whirlaw Common to Windy Harbour. I then followed the lane uphill to Eastwood Road. After a short walk west along the road I took the path onto Bride Stones Moor to reach the trig point on the Great Bride Stones. The walk continued as I took the path out to Kebs Road, a walk west along Kebs Road took me to the junction with Mount Lane and down Mount Lane and onto the bridleway of Stony Lane. I followed this across the hillside before turning right onto a bridleway down to Hartley Royd. Here I turned left onto a bridleway across Hudson Moor to reach the Orchan Rocks. I then made my way down the track of Jumps Lane back to Lydgate.

After a walk along Kebs Road and down Mount Lane I'm on the bridleway of Stony Lane that will take across the hillside and back to Lydgate. Before I go any further there's an item of interest on the other side of the wall on the left that I don't want to miss.
