25th August 2013 - Great Harlow & Bowland Knotts
Walk Details
Distance walked: 7.4 miles
Total ascent: 1213 ft
OS map used: OL41 - Forest of Bowland & Ribblesdale
Time taken: 5 hrs
Route description: Cross of Greet Bridge-Catlow Farm-Bowland Knotts-Cold Stone-Great Harlow-Cross of Greet-Cross of Greet Bridge
I started todays walk from a layby at the Cross of Greet Bridge where there's enough room to park a few cars. A public footpath leaves here for Catlow Farm though it isn't easy to follow at times. From Catlow Farm I followed a path then track uphill that reaches the road up from Stocks Reservoir near Bowland Knotts. After taking in the views from Bowland Knotts I made for Great Harlow. My route back was to follow the fenceline down to the road and the Cross of Greet and a road walk down to the Cross of Greet Bridge.

The River Hodder at the start of the walk, by the Cross of Greet Bridge
Rough grassland to cross as I head towards Catlow Farm
By the River Hodder at Catlow Farm
Stocks Reservoir comes into view as I head uphill towards Bowland Knotts
Approaching Bowland Knotts..
I've arrived on Bowland Knotts and I'm going to take in the view from the rocky outcrops to the east of the road while I have my lunch. Looking towards Gisburn Forest and Whelpstone Crag.
On the other side of the road are more outcrops and the highest, currently in shadow is adorned by a trig point
A great view over to Ingleborough and Penyghent
The rocky outcrops of Bowland Knotts from next to the trig point
Pendle Hill in the distance
The next destination of Great Harlow
Looking towards Whelpstone Crag
Whernside, Ingleborough and Penyghent from Bowland Knotts
Pendle Hill and Stocks Reservoir from Cold Stone, a prominent gritstone outcrop
Whernside, Ingleborough and Penyghent from the same spot
Looking across to Bowland Knotts from the collection of rocks known as Ravens Castle
and a hazy view to Pendle Hill
Ward's Stone from a cairn on Great Harlow that marks a great viewpoint
It's a bit too hazy for really good long distance views today but I can make out Middleton Fell, Gragareth, Whernside and Ingleborough in the Yorkshire Dales
Whernside, Ingleborough, Penyghent and Fountains Fell
Penyghent, Fountains Fell and Rye Loaf Hill
The socketed stone that formerly held the Cross of Greet. It's at the summit of the road that heads from Stocks Reservoir over to High Bentham.
The road heading down to High Bentham
I'm going in the other direction though, down to the Cross of Greet Bridge
Back at the Cross of Greet Bridge looking up to Catlow Fell
and a final shot of the River Hodder
