25th November 2017 - Pendle Hill
Walk Details
Distance walked: 5.6 miles
Total ascent: 1281 ft
OS map used: OL21 - South Pennines
Time taken: 3 hrs
Route description: Barely-Pendle Way-Pendle Hill-Downham Moor-Worston Moor-Downham Moor-Pendle Way-Barley
A long way from being my favourite walk up Pendle Hill this year. I set off from Barley in hope that the sunshine would last but it didn't. It soon clouded over and with a few snow showers blown through on the strong and cold wind up there it wasn't very pleasant at times. I did enjoy my first walk in snow of the season though.
From the car park in Barley I followed the trail of the Pendle Way to the summit of Pendle Hill. I then crossed the stile onto Downham Moor and followed the path across it to Worston Moor and the circular shelter there, where I had my lunch. I returned to Barley by the same route.

Following the Pendle Way towards a snowy Pendle Hill..
The Black Moss Reservoirs and Barley as I climb the path up the east face. The weather has taken a turn for the worse.

Heading for the summit and trig point
Sunshine on snowy fields below
At the trig point
A bleak looking Spence Moor
The Black Moss Reservoirs and Barley
Downham Moor on the other side of the wall
Drifted snow
A bit of sunshine on Weets Hill to the east
Heading across Downham Moor and although it's cold and windy, at least it's dry at the moment...
The Ribble Valley and hints of the Yorkshire Dales
Bleak moors
Looking back to the summit
Frozen pool with Longridge Fell and Easington Fell in the background
More bleak moors..
Across the stile onto Worston Moor
The circular shelter ahead will be my lunch stop
But before that, a few photos of the view across Clitheroe and the Ribble Valley...
Mearley Moor
The weather turned pretty nasty while I was sat in here as a snow shower passed through
The shower has passed but those skies look grey and leaden. Time I was heading back.
It's a good job that I know where I'm going
More snow falls as I make my way back to Barley..
