28th April 2012 - Bull Hill & Holcombe Moor

Walk Details

Distance walked: 4.6 miles

Total ascent: 735 ft

OS map used: 287 - West Pennine Moors

Time taken: 2 hrs

Route description: Layby on B6214 at Buckden Wood-Buckden Wood-Bull Hill-Pilgrims Cross memorial stone-Harcles Hill-Peel Tower-Chatterton Close-Buckden Wood-Layby on B6214 at Buckden Wood

The forecast for tomorrow, Sunday, is terrible and I only had time for a walk this morning so it had to be something reasonably short and local. There was a cold strong wind on the tops but the sun was out and it was dry.

I started this walk from the layby at Buckden Wood on the B6214 between Holcombe and Helmshore. I walked up through Buckden Wood and then up to the summit of Bull Hill. From there it was across Holcombe Moor to Harcles Hill and Peel Tower. My way back was the bridleway that runs along the side of the hill and then back down through Buckden Wood to the start.

Part of Holcombe Moor is an army firing range. I've never seen the flags flying though.

Peel Tower. I remember that you could go to the top back when I was a kid but I've not seen it open for a long time.
