3rd August 2014 - Wolfscote Dale, Shining Tor & Beresford Dale

Walk Details

Distance walked: 9.6 miles

Total ascent: 1676 ft

OS map used: OL24 - The Peak District, White Peak area

Time taken: 6 hrs

Route description: Hartington-Reynards Lane-Frank i' th' Rocks Bridge-Wolfscote Dale-Shining Tor-Milldale-Alstonefield-Narrowdale Farm-Frank i' th' Rocks Bridge-Beresford Dale- Hartington

The best weather today was to be found in the Peak District so I decided to do this walk that took me to one of the many limestone valleys of the White Peak, Wolfscote Dale. All my walks in this area over the past year have been firsts and I really enjoy the limestone scenery on show.

From Hartington I made my way out of the village and up Reynards Lane. A bridleway on the right was a short-cut past Staden Barn and back to Reynards Lane and the bridleway down to Frank i' th' Rocks Bridge. I then had an enjoyable walk down Wolfscote Dale to Shining Tor. A concessionary path kept me off the road until I reached the path across the hillside to Shining Tor. I then followed this on above Mill Dale and down to Viators Bridge and the hamlet of Milldale. From Milldale I followed a path uphill across fields to Millway Lane and through the village of Alstonefield. After a walk up the road to Hulme End I took a path across to and under Narrowdale Hill to Narrowdale Farm. A bridleway was then followed back to Frank i' th' Rocks Bridge for the walk up Beresford Dale and back to Hartington.

In Milldale and it's far busier than this picture would suggest. Lots of people were sitting by the banks of the Dove at Viators Bridge. My route took me up the lane to the right past Polly's Cottage.
