5th May 2014 - Whitewell & the Hodder

Walk Details

Distance walked: 7.0 miles

Total ascent: 828 ft

OS map used: OL41 - Forest of Bowland & Ribblesdale

Time taken: 3.5 hrs

Route description: Burholme Bridge-Whitewell-Seed Hill-Whitewell road-Stakes Farm-stepping stones-Wardsley-Leagram Mill-Knot Barn-Lower Greystoneley-Fair Oak-New Laund Farm-Burholme Bridge

A quiet walk for a Bank Holiday Monday and short enough to fit in before rain arrived later in the afternoon.

From where I parked next to Burholme Bridge I crossed the bridge to follow the road towards Whitewell. Where the grass verge runs out a permissive path continues in the fields next to the road. To head out of Whitewell I took the steep road up to the left and then the footpath to Seed Hill. I then followed a path across the hillside, down and across the Whitewell road and across more fields to reach a track down to Stakes Farm. I crossed the Hodder by the stepping stones and then a short road walk brought me to Leagram Mill. I then followed a bridleway past Knot Barn , Lower Greystoneley and Higher Greystoneley. Across a lane and a footpath took me past Fair Oak and around New Laund Hill and down to New Laund Farm. A short road walk and I was back at Burholme Bridge.

Looking back to Burholme Bridge as I head to Whitewell. I've got a grass verge to walk on at the moment but when that runs out a permissive path runs along the edge of the field next to the road.

The Inn at Whitewell, featured on the first episode of The Trip with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. Quiet at the moment at 1015 in the morning but packed when I drove past on the way home.

On the other side of the road and the field path continues a gentle descent towards the Hodder. Longridge Fell in the distance.

A great view of the Hodder valley before I follow the lane down to Stakes Farm to cross the river. The fell on the left is Totridge, the small bumps are the limestone hills of Long Knots and New Laund Hill and then there are the woods that surround the river.

The ford over Greystoneley Brook, there's a footbridge as well. Plenty of bluebells here too.
