7th April 2015 - Penyghent
Walk Details
Distance walked: 8.2 miles
Total ascent: 1802 ft
OS map used: OL2 - Yorkshire Dales, Southern & Western areas
Time taken: 5.5 hrs
Route description: Horton-Brackenbottom-Pennine Way-Penyghent-Plover Hill-Foxup Moor-Pennine Way-Horton
The spell of fine weather continues. I decided to head to Horton-in-Ribblesdale today and do Penyghent and Plover Hill, a walk I've done a few times and one that I've always enjoyed. There was plenty of sunshine around although the visibility wasn't as good as yesterday and it was quite hazy. It was also quite windy high up, that wasn't in the forecast.
From Horton I walked up the road to Brackenbottom and then up the path to the Pennine Way, which took me up to the summit of Penyghent. After having my lunch I made my way across the top of the moor to Plover Hill. My route back was to descend from Plover Hill to the Foxup to Horton bridleway, which I followed back to Horton.

Ingleborough and Whernside come into view as I head up the path from Brackenbottom
A great view of Penyghent
It's become pretty windy as I've gained height and patches of low cloud blow through
I can also see the fog that's made its way inland from the Irish Sea
I've had my lunch so a few photos of the view before I move on. Ingleborough and Whernside on the other side of Ribblesdale.
It's a bit murky looking to the northwest but I can make out Whernside, Great Knoutberry Hill and Dodd Fell Hill.
and finally the fog that's made its way through the gap in the hills that carries the A65
Heading for Plover Hill
The valley of Penyghent Gill that heads down into Littondale
A fine example of dry stone walling
Looking back to Penyghent
Ingleborough and Whernside from Plover Hill
Whernside and Great Knoutberry Hill
Dodd Fell Hill and the fells around Langstrothdale
The top of Littondale as I start my descent
This bridleway from Foxup to Horton is a joy to follow. Wide open spaces and great views.
Crossing a crystal clear beck
and passing a lichen encrusted post
The fringe of crags on Plover Hill
Penyghent above Horton Scar
It's springtime in Ribblesdale
