Walk Details
Distance walked: 10.3 miles
Total ascent: 2016 ft
OS map used: OL2 - Yorkshire Dales, Southern & Western areas (both sides) and a tiny bit of the north-east corner of OL41 - Forest of Bowland & Ribblesdale
Time taken: 7 hrs
Route description: Stainforth-Little Stainforth-Smearsett Scar-Pot Scar-Wharfe-Crummack Dale-Moughton Scars-Moughton-Moughton Scar-Moughton Nab-Little Stainforth-Stainforth
A walk from Stainforth that visited Smearsett Scar, Pot Scar and Moughton Scar as well as the summit of the limestone plateau of Moughton.
From Stainforth I crossed the Settle-Carlisle line to Little Stainforth with a visit to Stainforth Force on the way. I then made my way to Smearsett Scar and Pot Scar. There are step stiles in the walls on the top to allow access. From Pot Scar I used a bridleway and field footpaths to reach the hamlet of Wharfe. I then followed a bridleway into Crummack Dale which took me to Moughton. After a visit to the trig point I walked across the plateau past Long Scar to Moughton Scar. The way down isn't immediately obvious but a gate in a wall is the key to the descent. The path goes past Dry Rigg Quarry and then down to the road. I then followed the road back to Little Stainforth and Stainforth.
