7th July 2018 - Coronation Meadows

OS map used: OL41 - Forest of Bowland & Ribblesdale

Route description: Slaidburn-Bell Sykes Farm-Holmehead Bridge-Slaidburn-Newton in Bowland-Newton Bridge-Slaidburn

This is the third year in a row that I've visited the Coronation Meadows at Bell Sykes Farm near Slaidburn on National Meadows Day, which I'm guessing is the first Saturday in July. The wildflowers didn't look as good as they've previously done. I'm putting that down to all the hot and dry weather of recent weeks, the ground was baked hard. After having tea and cake at the farm I returned to Slaidburn for a walk by the River Hodder to Newton-in-Bowland and back. It was a beautiful summer's day, the better one of the weekend.

After visiting the meadows at Bell Sykes Farm and returning to Slaidburn I took the path by the western bank of the River Hodder to Newton-in-Bowland. I then crossed Newton Bridge and took the bridleway north on the opposite bank. This left the river through a patch of woodland, where a concessionary made its way back to the river at a footbridge. After crossing the footbridge my outbound route took me back to Slaidburn.
